Winter Storm February 2014

A 3-day winter event descended upon the northern half of Georgia from February 11 - 13, 2014. 

For Athens, GA, day 1 consisted mainly of some cold rain in the morning, followed by a break in the afternoon and a little sleet in the evening. More sleet overnight led into day 2 on which we expected snow that never came, and we braced ourselves for freezing rain with ice accumulations of up to one inch, which luckily also didn't come, because that would have been catastrophic. It was a raw day, and walking was impossible because everything was covered in frozen sleet.

Waking up on day 3, I saw that it had snowed just a enough overnight. The frozen sleet was covered with a layer of snow that provided some traction, and also made everything pretty - for a short while anyway.  These photos were taken in the morning of February 13 - by noon, things were melting fast. 

In retrospect, of course, we were quite lucky here in Athens; other areas, especially north from here and the Atlanta and Augusta area, saw up to 9 inches of snow and widespread power outages.

Nature had one more surprise in store for us: At 10:20 p.m. the next day - Valentine's Day - and earthquake struck Edgefield, SC, and it was felt in a radius of 150 miles, which included Athens.
